Session 1: Session 1 — The Quest for Righteousness: Story and Heart

Scripture: Matthew 5:6; Romans 3:21-24

  • What moments in the story exposed how the characters define righteousness? How did those definitions help or hinder them?
  • Read Matthew 5:6 and Romans 3:21-24 aloud. How does Scripture’s portrait of righteousness differ from the characters’ attempts to be ‘good’?
  • How can we hold empathy for fictional (or real) people who pursue righteousness apart from grace? Where do you see grace needed in your own life?

Brief prayer: ask God to give humility to see our own need for grace, and to teach us the difference between self-justifying efforts and righteousness received through Christ. Optional personal challenge: this week, journal one area where you tend to rely on performance rather than grace.

Session 2: Session 2 — Holiness in Daily Choices

Scripture: 1 Peter 1:15-16; Hebrews 12:14

  • Which everyday decisions in the book illustrated a pursuit of holiness or the lack of it? Were there surprising sources of holiness in the story?
  • Read 1 Peter 1:15-16 and Hebrews 12:14. How do these passages shape a practical understanding of holiness for ordinary life?
  • What small, tangible habits could you adopt that reflect holiness (peacemaking, truthfulness, generosity, Sabbath rest)? Choose one to try this week and report back next time.

Short reflection: invite each person to name one concrete habit they'll practice this week as a way of pursuing holiness. Close in prayer asking God to empower those small changes.

Session 3: Session 3 — Community, Mercy, and Restoration

Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-3; James 2:14-17

  • How did relationships in the narrative either enable restoration or deepen brokenness? What role did community play in characters’ growth?
  • Read Ephesians 4:1-3 and James 2:14-17. How should Christian community balance truth and mercy when someone is struggling?
  • What practical steps can our group or church take to be a restorative, gracious community for seekers and the spiritually wounded?

Closing litany: invite brief, whispered prayers for people we know who need restoration. End with a communal prayer asking God for humility, steadfast love, and courage to practice mercy.
